Buffalo Horn Ranch - Natural Bison & Buffalo Meat

Special Events

Buffalo Mother’s Day

Buffalo Mother’s Day is our annual Customer Appreciation Day. This is a great opportunity to spend an afternoon in the country. We hold the event in late June to show off the bison mothers and their new baby bison calves, which are born in May. The afternoon begins with a bison burger BBQ. We then give you a tour of our ranch including taking you to the bison herds and our extensive bison corral system. Information is given on the many aspects of our ranching operation. This includes the bison’s natural instincts, behavior and characteristics, feeding, breeding, birthing and rearing of offspring.

This year, Buffalo Mother’s Day is on
Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
Please RSVP by phone 403-556-2567 or e-mail peter@buffalohornranch.ca by Wednesday, June 22, 2012..

Each year we ask for a minimum $5 donation to support a charity in exchange for your lunch and attending this event. For several years we have been supporting the Trans Himalayan Aid Society. At the 2010 Buffalo Mother’s Day event we received $250 in donations which Judy and I matched to total a $500 donation to support the new school in Humla, Nepal. This donation went to help open the open the school and in 2011 we will be donating funds to maintain the school. The school needs $9,000 this year to run its program and hostel for 20 students.

The Humla school is located in Nepal’s remote Northwestern corner along the border of Tibet. The region can only be reached by rare flights or a 20 day trek. Humla is the poorest district in Nepal. The school is being run by READI Nepal.

READI Nepal, a local volunteer non-governmental organization (NGO), is dedicated to ‘fighting untouchability and illiteracy’ by improving the education, health and income generation opportunities of Humla villages. Partnering with TRAS, READI Nepal has started a pilot project to educate 20 young children (50% girls) selected from very poor, dalit (untouchable), minority or conflict-affected villages. TRAS is providing 73% of the funds. A house in Simikot has been rented and furnished as a hostel where the children are living. A young cook has been hired and trained to use local foods (rather than the expensive, low quality rice brought in by the government). One of the long-term goals of the hostel is that age-old barriers will begin to disappear as children from different castes and backgrounds sit and eat together at the same table. The children are enrolled in a private school in Simikot. With TRAS funding, two of the teachers attended an innovative teacher-training course in Kathmandu, and have returned full of confidence and ideas to share. TRAS has arranged for the creation of the very first library in Humla to be set up at the school, thanks to a grant from the Nepal Library Foundation of Vancouver.

See you June 25. Don’t forget to RSVP.
